Edward Frederick Martin Heide was born on 10 Oct 1876 in Hamel Wiet, Kreis, Ekenfoerde, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. He died on 15 Feb 1946 in Glendive, MT. He was buried in Riverview Cemetery, Circle, MT. He married Christina Sönksen on 30 Aug 1899 in Billings, MT.
Edward came to the United States in 1883 with his parents, one sister,
Augusta and 5 brothers. They settled near Willmington, Illinois and later
moved toGoodrich Township in Crawford county near Denison, IA.
Christina and Edward met in Iowa and came to Montana in late 1898 and
worked for his brother in Columbus, Montana. They married in August, 1899
and live in a boarding house in Columbus, Montana: Yellowstone Co. where
Christina worked as a helper at the boarding house and Edward worked for
his brother. In 1901, they moved by covered wagon to Dawson County to a
place on the Divide about 50 miles from Glendive (now McCone County.) The
family lived in a log house until 1904, when Edward heide built a
four-room frame house, butted into the side of the hill. During this
time, Edward worked on a ranch owned by a Glendive banker, Charlie
Banker. The country, at that time, had no roads and the Divide was very
rugged country. When the area was surveyed in 1907-08, the family home
was insideone of the survey lines, so Edward just filed on a Homestead
there. They raised sheep and later cattle and began to farm on a small
scale about 1920.
Inthose days, the only transportation was on horseback. The schooling
was verysketchy and Charlotte and Johannas (2 oldest children) were sent
back to Iowa 2 different times to stay with their grandparents near
Odebolt to attend school.
The first local school in Montana was built in 1913 and the first day of
school began Jan. 1st and the term was five months. The children had to
walk 4 miles to school. also, during the early 1900's there were no
doctors sobabies were usually by neighbor women in the area or by the
husband. Christina went Odebolt, Iowa to have her third child, Heinrich
in 1908. Lottie was the oldest child and had to assume much of the
household work as her Mother, Christina was not to well.
Children of Christina and edward Heide have describedtheir parents as
being very hard workers and very conservative. Also, very stern and
strict, but very kind. Lottie and Frieda, both have stated that their
mother Christina was, "the best cook and baker".
Christina Sönksen [Parents] was born on 2 Jun 1879 in Hamburg, Germany. She died on 17 Feb 1944 in Glendive, MT. She was buried in Riverview Cemetery, Circle, MT. She married Edward Frederick Martin Heide on 30 Aug 1899 in Billings, MT.
Christina came to the US in 1898 with her mother, one sister-Frieda and
fourbrothers- Marius, Frederick, Christian & Johannas. They emigrated
from Bredstedt, Germany on the SS Lauenburg and arrived at the Port of
Galveston, Texason March 1, 1898. They went to jion her father Johannas
and brother Bernhardton a farm in Crawford County, near Denison, Iowa.
On immigration records itstates that their destination was Denison,
Texas.
